LNP follows Labor’s example on Spit development

Media Release

Deputy Opposition Leader Tim Mulherin said it had a taken a series of bad polls and the threat of electoral wipeout for the LNP to finally listen to Queenslanders and Labor, and rule out development of the Gold Coast Spit.
“This is great news for the people of the Gold Coast, but if the LNP had’ve listened to them and to Labor in the first place it didn’t have to go this far,” Mr Mulherin said.
“Labor investigated similar proposals in 2006 and ruled it out. The LNP has dredged up this idea, spent untold millions of taxpayer dollars looking at it, only to come to the same conclusion."
“That money could’ve been better spent on the schools and roads the Gold Coast needs."
“And they’ve only reached that conclusion because their polling shows how unpopular this Premier and his Government has become on the Gold Coast."
“Along with hard-working community groups, Labor has been consistently consulting with the community, which has long said it has no desire for the Spit to be developed."
“My concern is that this is an announcement in the lead-up to the next election, and then the LNP will break its promise and allow developers back into the Broadwater."
“You can’t trust the LNP to keep its promises. It said unemployment would be lower, it said power bills would be cheaper, and it said it had a plan that didn’t involve asset sales."
“They’ve broken all those promises and many more. How you can trust Campbell Newman to keep his word and not develop the Spit after the next election?"

“Only a vote for Labor will ensure there’s no development of the Broadwater, now or into the future.”
