Premier should rule out Levy as Crime Commission CEO: D’Ath

Media Release

Campbell Newman and the LNP have stumbled at their first accountability hurdle after failing to support Labor amendments to ensure true bipartisanship existed within the new Crime and Corruption Commission, Shadow Attorney General Yvette D’Ath said today.
Ms D’Ath said the Government had stubbornly refused to legislate for bipartisanship support for the CEO of the CCC in an amazing show of political hypocrisy.
She said the Newman Government had done the bare-minimum to create an illusion of accountability but the person who will control the purse strings and the resources of the CCC could still remain a partisan LNP appointment.
“Campbell Newman and Jarrod Bleijie were clearly speaking spin not substance when they said they would listen to Queenslanders,” Ms D’Ath said.
“This arrogant Newman Government have taken the extraordinary step of legislating for the CEO to be a commissioner- something which didn’t happen under Labor."
“We’re talking about a position that carries a potential salary of more than half-a-million dollars and huge responsibilities and powers."
“What the Newman Government is doing is leaving the door open to ignore appropriate checks and balances and install a handpicked LNP mate in the plum, highly paid position."
“It’s astonishing that Campbell Newman and Jarrod Bleijie continue to support Ken Levy as acting chair of the CCC when he is under police investigation and when he doesn’t have bipartisan support."
“This isn’t a government that’s keeping promises about accountability."

“It’s a government that’s keeping promises about jobs for mates.”
