HIGH COURT DECISION QLD anti-association laws

Shadow Attorney-General Yvette D’Ath says the Opposition will examine today’s High Court decision in detail.
“Without yet being able to examine the full judgement in detail, it appears parts of the Newman Government’s crime gang laws remain untested because of the lack of standing of the appellant,” Ms D’Ath said.
“Whether these laws are constitutional or not, the fact remains they are bad laws. Just as Australians understood WorkChoices were bad laws, even though they were upheld by the High Court, Queenslanders know that the VLAD laws are bad.
“Despite the High Court decision, Labor’s position remains unchanged. Labor will repeal Newman’s anti-association laws and will implemented laws that target organised crime, not innocent people.”

“Labor will continue to oppose provisions that have the potential to criminalise innocent people who have never committed an offence in their lives solely on the basis of who they mix with,” Ms D’Ath said
