Mark Butler MP.
Shadow Minister for Environment
Climate Change and Water
Date: 17 April 2015
Tony Abbott has found millions of
tax-payers’ dollars to fund his attack on renewable energy while at the
same time gutting Australia’s science and university funding.
Tony Abbott is using scarce public funds to help legitimatise his climate scepticism and attack on renewable energy.
The Abbott Government is giving $4 million to
climate contrarian Bjorn Lomborg’s Australian Consensus Centre, after
his Copenhagen Consensus Centre was defunded.
Tony Abbott has deputised one of the world’s
most well-known renewable energy sceptics to continue his climate change
denial and attacks on renewable energy.
Not content with denying the science of
climate change, Tony Abbott’s continued attack on renewable energy means
thousands of jobs in the renewable energy sector remain at risk.
Since Tony Abbott was elected, investment in
Australia's large scale renewable energy industry has fallen 88 per
cent, while around the world investment rose by 16 per cent.
Labor has announced we will accept the Clean Energy Council’s position of 33,500 GwH by 2020 to stop the loss of further jobs and investment.
Labor will use this target as a floor and if
elected, acting on the advice of the sector, will increase the RET out
to 2020 to bolster investment, specifically in large scale solar.
Labor's support is contingent on the small-scale solar rooftop scheme remaining unchanged.
In addition, Emissions Intensive Trade Exposed industries must be exempt, as Labor has consistently called for.
