LNP CUTS POSE RISK TO MOUNT ISA AIR QUALITY

Media Release.

An air-monitoring unit in Mount Isa has not been operating for over nine months, highlighting the dangerous consequences of Newman Government budget cuts in regional Queensland.

Opposition Environment Spokesperson Jackie Trad warned in December last year that the closure of the Environment and Heritage Protection Office in Mount Isa would create a monitoring black spot.

“The closure of this air-monitoring unit poses a significant risk to the health of people of Mount Isa and the LNP’s failure to act for over nine months is simply not good enough,” Ms Trad said.

“With this air-monitoring unit offline, the Mount Isa community continues to be left in the dark about the quality of the air they breathe."

“When the office was closed by the Newman Government last year, the Department guaranteed that it would ‘not compromise environmental standards’ – clearly this is not the case."

"Today's revelation again demonstrates that Campbell Newman is the Premier for Brisbane, not Queensland and it's the people of regional Queensland that are suffering.”
