Indonesia has increased naval patrols in the Indian
ocean after Australia's admission that it breached Indonesian
territorial waters while trying to stop asylum seeker boats.
The
central government in Jakarta has released a statement demanding that
Australia halt activities under Operation Sovereign Borders that lead to
the Navy entering Indonesian territory without permission.Indonesia has described the incursions as a serious matter and a violation of its sovereignty.
A spokesman for Indonesia's minister for politics, law and security, Djoko Suyanto, delivered the statement on behalf of the government in Jakarta.
"The Government of Indonesia underlines that any such violation of whatever basis constitutes a serious matter in bilateral relations of the two countries," Agus Ruchyan Barnas said, speaking in Bahasa Indonesia.
"Indonesia demands that such operation[s] conducted by the Australian Government that lead to [these] incidents be suspended until formal clarification is received and assurance of recurrence of such incidents has been provided."
Mr Barnas says that three Navy ships have been sent to the region where Australia is understood to have been turning back asylum seeker boats. Another Naval Frigate will also be sent to the area.
He says it reflects Indonesia's commitment to stopping what Indonesia calls illegal migrants.
Earlier, Australia apologised to Indonesia after admitting vessels operating under its border protection policy had "inadvertently" breached Indonesian territorial sovereignty "on several occasions".
