Opposition
Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk says the latest ABS figures show the
Premier has broken his number-one election promise of a 4% jobless rate.
“Having our state heading towards a 4% jobless rate was the Premier’s number one promise in his
Contract With Queensland, but so far he has not created a single additional full-time job in almost two years,” Mrs Palaszczuk said.
“In fact we lost 6,600 jobs in Queensland in December including 900 full-time jobs.
“Since
the March election we have lost 12,300 full-time jobs when the Premier
promised to create 420,000 new jobs over six years.
“Treasurer
Tim Nicholls has already tried to dismiss the LNP’s 4% jobless promise
as ‘a stretch target’, but now it is clear the LNP has no intention of
even trying to keep the promise.
“The
LNP cannot deliver on its key promise because it spends all its
energies on mopping up the bungles and mistakes of incompetent Ministers
like Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie.
“It
is well past the time for a Cabinet clean-out, and for the Premier to
appoint Ministers who will deliver results, and deliver new jobs as
promised, not bungles and blunders.”
Ms
Palaszczuk said the ABS figures showed Queensland’s seasonally adjusted
unemployment rate was 5.9% in December — up from 5.7% in November and
up from 5.5% at the March 2012 state election.
She said the ABS figures also showed the participation rate that measured people looking for work was 65.6% in December — down from 65.8% in November and 66.9% at the last election.
“The
participation rate has fallen by 1.3% since the 2012 election which
means there are more than 50,000 jobless who are no longer counted as
unemployed in the official statistics,” Ms Palaszczuk
said.
“If
these people were still counted in the unemployment statistics the
state’s unemployment rate would now by 7.7% seasonally adjusted.”
