University of Queensland calls event a 'trivialisation of the life-endangering journeys asylum seekers face'
The University of Queensland has condemned a group of Liberal
National party students for an “appallingly insensitive” pub crawl
celebrating “a hundred long days without any new arrivals”.
The event, which was advertised on Facebook, made a number of references to asylum seekers who arrive by boat and themed the pub crawl on the Coalition’s hardline stance on border protection.
“As the sun sets we’ll seek temporary protection at Irish Murphy’s by which point you might find yourself feeling a little leaky,” the description of the Queensland Universities Liberal National Club “rivercrawl” event says.
It continues: “A lifejacket is optional, however we will do our best to ensure none of you find yourself overboard.”
