Tony Abbott has an opportunity to
listen to Australians and finally take meaningful action on climate
change when he announces the Coalition's emissions reduction target
tomorrow.
Research conducted by The Climate
Institute shows two thirds of Australians think Tony Abbott should take
climate change more seriously.
"This means dropping the polluters' slush
fund, putting a legal cap on pollution and stopping the attacks on
renewable energy," Shadow Minister for Climate Change Mark said.
"Tony Abbott has desperately tried a
smoke and mirrors approach to tackling climate change with his woeful
policy, but Australians know it's nothing but an ineffective waste of
their money.
"As the rest of the world's leaders are
taking major steps towards meaningful action, Tony Abbott should stop
trying to force Australia backwards."
The research also shows overwhelming support for renewable energy amongst Australians.
"Tony Abbott is so out of touch on this
issue, it beggars belief that any world leader could defy the global
momentum and the calls for action from his electorate.
"Most Australians prefer renewable energy
to traditional energy sources, want to see more investment in solar,
wind and other renewable energy resources and think Tony Abbott is doing
the complete opposite of what's needed.
"When the Prime Minister is so out of step with Australians,
something needs to change. Either he needs to hear the concerns of
Australians and change his tune, or his Party need to listen to the
people and change their leader."
