AI companies 'stole' Australian culture, news bosses say as they call for licensing deals.

Australia's biggest media organisations have called on AI companies to pay to license journalism and cultural content, saying it should not be used to train AI without permission.

The ABC revealed AI developer Anthropic has already approached the broadcaster about audio and video that capture how Australians speak.

Speaking at the Andrew Olle Media Lecture, Reuters editor-in-chief Alessandra Galloni said AI can support journalism, but warned original reporting must be protected and paid for.
