In short:

A fossil of an ancient mammal relative with platypus-like appendages has been found in China.

Megacauda sungei appears to be an early example of a semiaquatic mammal-like creature.

The ancient animal lived about 160 million years ago in the middle Jurassic period.

With a body like a platypus, tail of an otter and a canine head, a fossil found in China shows the earliest signs of a mammal-like animal with a semiaquatic lifestyle.
