Bleijie fails Queensland with botched sex offender laws.

Media Release.

The Attorney-General has failed all Queenslanders with his botched new sex offender laws which have today seen serial sex offender Robert Fardon released from prison.

Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk said despite his best efforts to shift blame, Attorney General Jarrod Bleijie needed to take responsibility for the fact that his bungled Criminal Law Amendment (Public Interest Declarations) Amendment Bill 2013 had today been proven a disaster.

“The truth is the Court of Appeal has today declared these new botched laws completely invalid,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“And for this inexperienced Attorney to attempt to claim otherwise is appalling."

“The truth is his laws have failed dismally."

“That’s because they were rushed through Queensland’s Parliament. That’s because he refused to consult with the Law Society or the Bar Association."

“It’s because he did not take the right course and allow the laws to be scrutinised by the appropriate Parliamentary Committee.

“This is what happens when you believe you know better than every lawyer in Queensland."

“His failure has allowed this decision today to release this man."

“And now that he has created this disastrous mess, he needs to explain to Queenslanders what he intends to do and how he intends to fix his mess."

“I said in Parliament when these bills were slammed through that I would not be surprised when the Attorney was forced to come back to the House with amendments to the bill, nor would I be surprised if these laws were to be declared invalid."

“Today, that has come home to roost.”
