More than a dozen outback Queensland towns have
broken their records for the hottest March day.
Bollon | 43.2 |
---|---|
Roma | 42.5 |
Mitchell | 42 |
Injune | 41.7 |
St George | 42 |
Miles | 41 |
Oakey | 38.7 |
Surat | 41.7 |
Isisford | 44 |
Tambo | 42 |
Barcaldine | 42.2 |
Blackall | 42.6 |
Richmond | 42.7 |
Mt Isa | 41.4 |
Urandangi | 44.9 |
Hot, dry air has built up over the interior and northerly winds have pushed it further inland than normal for this time of year.
Roma, Mitchell, Injune and Miles all smashed their records and Richmond was 42.7 degrees Celsius which is well above the 42.3C record from 1924.
Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Diana Eadie said the temperatures were very unusual for this time of year.
"We've seen some really extraordinary temperatures," she said.
"Spare some thought for the people out there.
"I wouldn't want to be out there."
Today's heatwave spanned more than 1,500 kilometres with Saturday likely to also be uncomfortable.
"But there is a trough that is pushing through that should start giving relief," Ms Eadie said.
Brisbane was forecast to hit 34C and Ipswich 38C on Friday but early cloud cover combined with fog and a very light drizzle, put a lid on temperatures.
It was not the first heatwave Queensland experienced this year.
Western Queensland endured temperatures 9C above averages earlier this month.
