ABC Radio Australia
Dear Parliament:
As an international listener of Radio
Australia I need to write. Radio Australia shortwave was the voice of
Australia for us here in the U.S. I would listen to ABC most days
before work and at night when reception permitted. I enjoyed the
impartial news, happenings in the Pacific region and the wonderful
music programs. Since ABC went off the air I have not received any
news about Australia save for a couple of articles in the New York
Times. As you know probably know our media here in the U.S. is on the
defensive from the current administration. This leaves U.S. citizens
wondering whose account of the news is accurate. The media here is
under assault and many people believe the fake news circulating
around. Radio Australia was an unquestionable, world class source of
impartial news. It is bad timing that they decide to leave the
airwaves probably when they are needed most by us listeners here in
the U.S. RNZI’s reception here is not nearly as good as ABC. Will
listeners here in the U.S. have to tune into China Radio
International to get our news on Australia and the Pacific? Please
return to shortwave. Radio Australia shortwave is the voice of
Australia.
Sincerely,
Richard Nowak
And....
And....
"For
example, the ABC’s correspondent Liam Cochrane arriving in Dillon's
Bay on Erromango Island in Vanuatu after Cyclone Pam (cyclone was in
March 2015, his arrival on Erromango may have been 1 April or
thereabouts). He noted14: 'We expected the worst. Death, injury,
hunger. But when we arrived, the Dillon’s Bay village chief ...
told me they knew the cyclone was approaching, so they sheltered in
the two solid buildings in the village. Most houses were flattened
but not a single injury. I asked him how he knew the cyclone was
approaching. He said, ‘ABC
Radio’
(shortwave)."
