*THE
WORKER*
BRISBANE,
JULY 27, 1895.
The
Fat-Man Politician.
Pray
give me your attention,
I'm
the leader of the van,
Of
the people you might mention,
Who
befriend the working man.
As
a friend and an example,
I
think you will allow
I'm
a really saintly sample,
And
my wings are sprouting now!
I
provided him education,
I
find him food and clothes,
I
give him legislation,
I
protect him from his foes.
I
find him with employment,
I
mitigate his pains,
With
pleasure and enjoyment,
And
I almost find him brains.
For
I tell him whom to follow,
What
to think and whom to quote;
I
teach him when to holloa,
And
I tell him how to vote.
I
smile upon him sweetly,
He
is such a simple sheep;
So
I do him very neatly,
And
I do him very cheap.
When
the demagogue uprises,
With
his Socialistic pranks,
Saying
I get all the prizes,
While
my friend gets all the blanks;
I
pretend to be disgusted,
And
I answer with a sneer,
“By
the workmen I am trusted!”
And
the workmen say “Hear! hear!”
So
the Socialist may chatter,
But
it's not a bit of use;
While
the working man I flatter,
I
may pluck him like a goose.

Clarion.
