The Senate could vote on a carbon tax repeal bill before Christmas, after the Opposition failed to delay the vote until next year.
Last night the Greens voted down a Labor motion to set up a Senate inquiry into the legislation, while Labor voted against a Greens motion for an inquiry into the Government's alternative climate change policy "direct action".
Greens leader Christine Milne told the Senate she wants a vote on the carbon repeal bills before Christmas.
"We do not want to avoid a vote on this. It is time to take it straight up to the Coalition Government. It is time to say this legislation is working," she said.
"We are not going to cast doubt. There is going to be no equivocation on this."
But Opposition Senate Leader Penny Wong has a different view.

"It is, I think, incumbent upon the Senate to ensure that there is proper consideration of this very large and very complex package of legislation, and the alternative that is proposed to replace it before the Senate is asked to vote on it," she said.
