SCHOOLKIDS BONUS REPEAL A SAVAGE CUT TO AUSTRALIAN FAMILIES

Media Release.
13 Nov 2013

"The Government's legislation introduced today to repeal the Schoolkids Bonus is a savage cut to low and middle income families and a cruel hit to Australian schoolkids," Shadow Minister for Families and Payments Jenny Macklin said today.

Today, Treasurer Joe Hockey has introduced legislation that will leave more than 1.3 million low and middle income Australian families struggling to meet the education expenses of their children.

"This will hit struggling families hard, and it means their kids risk missing out on all the things they need to do well at school.

"What's even more is that the Schoolkids Bonus isn't even linked to the MRRT legislation. It has nothing to do with the MRRT. This is nothing more than a sneaky, cynical attempt to rip money out of the pockets of struggling families."

"By June of this year, 1.3 million Australian families had received the Schoolkids Bonus, which pays $410 for each child in primary school and $820 for each child in secondary school," Shadow Minister for Education Kate Ellis said.

"The Schoolkids Bonus has meant much needed relief for low and middle income families struggling to meet the costs of their children's education.

"Every one of these families will be worse off when the Schoolkids Bonus is repealed. Scrapping the Schoolkids Bonus means the average Australian family with two kids will be $1,230 worse off every year and $15,000 worse off over the life of their child's education.

"This is a savage cut from a Government that clearly doesn't care about Australian families or our kids' education."
