REVIEW MUST EXPLAIN RUSH TO OPEN HOSPITAL

Media Release

Shadow Health Minister, Jo-Ann Miller, says Lawrence Springborg needs to ensure any review of the opening of the new Children’s Hospital two months early does not exclude an examination of his involvement in the debacle.
“A review by a medical practitioner no matter how experienced and well-intentioned may not find the truth about any involvement by the Minister in the opening of the new hospital two months ahead of time,” Mrs Miller said.
“It may be more appropriate for the parliamentary Health and Community Services Committee to conduct an investigation and call the Minister to give evidence under oath."
“The committee could also ask the Minister to release documents such as briefing notes or other information to see if any political pressure was brought to bear."
“If he has nothing to hide he should agree to that course of action."
“The government announced on 3 October that the new hospital would open two months ahead of schedule on 29 November."
“It is now obvious the new hospital opened well before all facilities and services for patients, their families, and staff were ready."
“What’s not obvious is why Lawrence Springborg allowed that to happen and why the date was brought forward a full two months."
“Was he told of the risks involved? If so, why did he ignore them?"
“Was it to fit into the LNP’s schedule of wasteful publicly funded advertising campaigns? Or was it to fit into Lawrence Springborg’s own personal campaign to lead the LNP?"
“Yet again we need answers from a Minister who ducks for cover behind hospital and health boards every single time there is a problem."
“It is about time he fronted up and gave some answers to very simple questions."
“The early opening has clearly had an adverse impact on patients, their families, and staff and all of them deserve an explanation from Lawrence Springborg,” Mrs Miller
