Shadow Emergency Services Minister, Bill Byrne, says the Newman Government is playing catch-up with the Labor Party by signing an agreement with firefighters on changes covering work-related health conditions.
“The agreement with firefighters on new ‘presumptive legislation’ and other issues reflects a commitment made by Labor in December 2013,” Mr Byrne said.
“Campbell Newman has finally come around to awarding the auxiliary firefighters their own award."
“Labor moved amendments to the Attorney General’s anti worker legislation in the Queensland Parliament to ensure that auxiliary firefighters could obtain their own award."
“But the LNP used its massive majority to vote so that auxiliary firefighters were denied an award and today they admit that Labor got it right."
“After spending almost three years attacking government workers and their rights and entitlements, it is amazing what the LNP will agree to just months before an election."
“While the Newman Government was busy using its huge majority to arrogantly ram through anti-worker laws, Labor was listening to the genuine concerns of our firefighters and the impact their jobs can have on their personal health and safety."
“We responded in a measured and timely manner, unlike the LNP that is clearly panicking about its shabby track record on IR issues."
“When it has the time, opportunity, and parliamentary majority to do the right thing for firies, the LNP sits on its hands."
“When it thinks it can gain a political advantage it suddenly finds a reason to act."
“Queenslanders can see who is genuinely interested in the right and conditions of Queensland workers and history shows it is not the LNP,” Mr Byrne said.
