You haven’t heard from me very much this year, and the reason is
small, drooly and likes the nightlife. 7 months ago I gave birth to a
happy and healthy baby girl. So far it’s been a mix of awe,
sleeplessness, gratitude, worry and wonder – that wild ride known by
parents everywhere.
But there’s actually another birthday on my mind today.
Five years ago, out of the ashes of the abolished Climate Commission, we launched the Climate Council: a bold experiment in people-powered, expert science and climate communications. Then, like now, we are only here because of people like you.
I’ve been reflecting on what a remarkable feat it was to launch what is now Australia's leading independent climate organisation. So to celebrate, we’ve created a special video to give you a behind the scenes look at those chaotic early days (including how PayPal almost shut us down)!
As we reflect on this special anniversary, and take a walk down memory lane, we can’t help but be quietly pleased that we’ve outlasted the Abbott Government by some years now...
Starting the Climate Council five years ago was an act of defiance, most definitely. But most of all it was an act of hope. Hope that the Australian people, if given the chance, would support a strong, independent science-based organisation, to fill the critical role of educating the Australian public about climate change: the science, impacts and solutions.
Hope, real hope, is not a fuzzy feeling. It’s a way of showing up in the world. Life is messy. Politics is messy (if not an outright mess). And parenting is definitely messy. Sure it’s easier to sit back and be cynical, but that’s not how you get anything worthwhile done.
I’ve become convinced the decision to hope intelligently, act with conviction and stay the course changes everything.
I can’t help but be so proud of what we’ve achieved together.
Here’s to the next 5.
Amanda McKenzie
Climate Council CEO
P.S. The Climate Council only exists because of people like you, and we need your support for the next 5. Whether you chip in $10 a week, or make different contributions as often as you can, everything we do is made possible by supporters like you.
P.P.S. Help celebrate by sharing our video with your friends and family on Facebook.
