Time magazine has named Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy their 2022 Person of the Year, saying he won global accolades for his courage in resisting Russia's devastating invasion.
Key points:
- Time magazine's editor-in-chief said it was the most clear-cut choice in memory
- He was honoured for his success as a wartime leader
- The Time tradition dates back to 1927
Refusing to leave Ukraine's capital of Kyiv at the outbreak of the war as Russian bombs rained down, the former comedian rallied his compatriots in broadcasts from the capital and travelled across his war-torn nation, the publication noted in bestowing its annual title.
Time editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal said the decision was the most "clear-cut in memory".
"Whether the battle for Ukraine fills one with hope or with fear, Volodymyr Zelenskyy galvanised the world in a way we haven't seen in decades," he said.
"For proving that courage can be as contagious as fear, for stirring people and nations to come together in defence of freedom, for reminding the world of the fragility of democracy—and of peace—Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the spirit of Ukraine are Time's 2022 Person of the Year."
On Tuesday Mr Zelenskyy visited Ukrainian troops near the front lines in eastern Ukraine.
"Zelenskyy's success as a wartime leader has relied on the fact that courage is contagious," Time wrote in the president's profile.
"It spread through Ukraine's political leadership in the first days of the invasion, as everyone realised the president had stuck around."
Tesla Inc Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk was named Time's Person of the Year in 2021, a year that saw his electric car company become the most valuable car-maker in the world.
Other previous winners include Greta Thunberg, Angela Merkel, Mark Zuckerberg and Barack Obama.
Time began this tradition in 1927.
