Media Release.
Shadow
Minister for Police Bill Byrne says Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie should be
focusing on fixing his failed bootcamp in the Far North before spending more
money on new facilities throughout Queensland.
“The
Attorney-General’s bootcamp program has been a farce,” Mr Byrne said.
“At Kuranda,
we’ve seen two juvenile offenders escape from the facility and threaten local
residents."
“That’s a
100% escape rate from the offenders in that facility – a clear indication of the
Attorney-General’s incompetence."
“And now,
without any guarantees that he has fixed the problems he created, the
Attorney-General wants to push ahead with more facilities across the
state."
“Local
residents in Townsville, Rockhampton and the Fraser Coast should receive an
ironclad guarantee from the Attorney-General that these proposed new facilities
will be safe, secure and well-managed, with no escapes or major disciplinary
problems, or he should put an immediate stop to their roll-out."
“How is the
process for establishing the new facilities improved from the debacle we’ve seen
at Kuranda?
“How can
local communities have any confidence in the Attorney-General, given his woeful
record on delivering these bootcamps?
“Can the
Attorney-General rule out using Stuart State School – on John-Paul Langbroek’s
list of schools to be closed down – as a bootcamp site?
“I can’t
stand by while the Attorney-General’s incompetence puts local communities at
risk.”
