Media Release.
Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk says the huge turnout for Labour Day across Queensland at the weekend show the LNP’s efforts to attack the event have failed.
“Labour Day will always be in May just as it has been since the state’s first Labour Day march was held in Barcaldine in 1891 by striking shearers,” Ms Palaszczuk said.
“The Newman Government and its blundering Attorney-General thought they could dampen enthusiasm for Labour Day through its unnecessary switch of public holidays as part of their ongoing attack on employees’ rights and entitlements."
“Its efforts to attack Labour Day and the wider labour movement have clearly failed.”
Ms Palaszczuk said the failed attempt to stifle Labour Day celebrations was another to add to the list of embarrassing blunders by Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie which also included:
- his bungling of the establishment of Callinan Review of the CMC,
- his deliberately misleading statements on court house closures last year,
- his sacking of more than 200 staff from the Court Reporting Bureau, and
- his record as the Minister with a 100% escape rate from his
boot camp program.
