Shadow Police
Minister, Bill Byrne, says the Minister Jack Dempsey needs to explain why a
person allegedly involved in the crash that killed a father of two on the
weekend and on bail for other alleged offences was left unguarded at hospital.
“This is a person
alleged to have broken into a house, stolen a car on Friday night, and driven so
recklessly that he was involved in a crash that killed a man on his way to work
on Saturday,” Mr Byrne said.
“The Minister must
explain why this man has escaped and is now on the run, even when he has an
outstanding arrest warrant for offences allegedly committed weeks ago, long
before the fatal weekend crash."
“Why was this person
not under arrest and not charged for the offences relating to the fatal crash
including the alleged theft of a motor vehicle?"
“If he was under
arrest was it discontinued, and why wasn’t he charged so a bedside court hearing
could be convened enabling him to be held in a secure hospital unit?"
“Can the Minister
explain why he was left in hospital unguarded? Did restrictions on police being
paid overtime or other issues play a part in this escape?"
“These events follow
the Minister’s recent failure to ensure public alerts were made when two sex
offenders escaped jail in Townsville and the 100% escape rate from the bungled
Bleijie boot camp at Kuranda,” Mr Byrne said.
