Media Release.
Revelations that more jobs could go as
part of the Newman Government’s belated electricity sector plans will place
central Queensland’s rising unemployment rate under even more pressure, Member
for Mackay Tim Mulherin said.
Mr
Mulherin said today’s ABS data showed that the number of unemployed in the
region increased by 5,300 over the last 12 months, with the unemployment rate
rising from 3.9% to 5.9%.
“At a time
when the official data shows that unemployment is rising, the Newman Government
continues its assault on the jobs of regional Queenslanders,” Mr Mulherin
said.
“After
already sacking 14,000 staff, revelations that Ergon staff are facing uncertain
futures will place even more pressure on our local jobs market."
“It’ll
also have a big impact on our local economy. If the unemployment rate continues
to climb, locals will be less willing to spend money in shops and restaurants,
and local businesses will be unwilling to invest."
“The
latest job losses come at a time Queensland families are also paying the price
for Campbell Newman’s broken promises on the cost of living."
“The
biggest ever increase in electricity prices and massive tax hikes will make
paying the household bills a real struggle for many families."
“The LNP
is too lazy to create a plan for jobs and are relying on the Labor-initiated
resources projects coming on stream."
“I would
urge Campbell Newman to focus on creating jobs, not cutting them. A good start
would be to pick up the Opposition’s policy of implementing the renowned
Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative."
“At the
very least, stem the tide of job cuts and help Queensland families make ends
meet.”
