More Financial Counsellors to Help Problem Gamblers and their Families

Media Release

PROBLEM gamblers and their families in north Queensland will have a chance to rebuild their lives with the announcement of funding to support new financial counselling services.
Senator for Queensland Jan McLucas welcomed the Federal Labor Government's announcement of $271,258 to provide more support and services to people affected by problem gambling in north Queensland.
"UnitingCare Community will be granted $271,258 to deliver these services in Townsville, Charters Towers, Cloncurry, Mount Isa, and the Mackay Whitsunday region" Senator McLucas said.
"Many Australians gamble responsibly, but for others it can have a devastating impact on their lives and the lives of those around them.
"Extra financial counsellors on the ground will make it possible to help more problem gamblers overcome their addiction and help them and their families rebuild their lives.
"The counsellors will help people to access Emergency Relief or affordable credit options to help them through financial difficulties."
UnitingCare Community's Regional Director Ms Fran Tilley commended the Commonwealth Government for taking a preventive and proactive approach.
"Financial distress can often lead to more serious issues if not addressed early," said Ms Tilley.
"With more financial counsellors on the ground, we can ensure those in crisis have access to immediate and appropriate information and support."
The financial counsellors will work closely with Queensland Government-funded gambling help services when they run community outreach services and work with gaming venues.
The funding for the north is part of a $22.6 million package the Gillard Labor Government is rolling out around Australia over the next four years.
The Financial Management Program is investing more than $480 million to June 2016 for a range of services to help people in need overcome immediate financial difficulty, improve their money management skills and enjoy a better quality life through financial independence.
"Problem gambling affects some five million Australians and the Gillard Government is working hard to deliver genuine, long-lasting reforms to help problem gamblers and their families," said Senator McLucas.
