Queensland urged to deliver for schools in today's budget

Every school in the Far North will benefit from extra money and support under the Federal Labor Government's school funding reforms.Queensland Senator Jan McLucas is urging Premier Campbell Newman to sign up to the National Plan for School Improvement which will mean Queensland schools will gain $3.8 billion over the next six years. "Budgets can be difficult but they are about setting priorities," Senator McLucas said. "Premier Campbell Newman cannot continue to ignore the principals, teachers and parents who want their schools to become smarter and stronger." "This budget is about where Mr Newman's priorities lie." "There needs to be extra money for schools in today's budget." Of the $3.8 billion that will be invested in Queensland, $2.5 billion would come from the Australian Government and $1.3 billion from the State Government. "This is a very good deal for Queensland and critical for the Far North. "It will mean more money for regional and remote schools, more for indigenous students and more for children with special needs and disabilities." Senator McLucas said Mr Newman should stop distorting the facts on school funding reform. "Mr Newman continues to fudge the Federal Government's funding offer. The fact is there is significant funding on the table and we want him to be part of this important discussion that is about ensuring all Queensland children get a better start in life."
