SA WOULD LOSE UNDER CHANGES TO GST DISTRIBUTION ON LIBERALS’ AGENDA

SENATOR THE HON PENNY WONG

MINISTER FOR FINANCE AND DEREGULATION

MEDIA RELEASE

4 June 2013

Federal Liberal WA candidate and former WA State Treasurer, Christian Porter, has confirmed that a change to the distribution of the GST is top of the Liberals’ agenda, which would see around $1 billion ripped away from South Australia’s Budget each year.
This would hit South Australian families and the services they rely on.
Speaking about whether the rate or base of the GST should be changed, Mr Porter said:
“It’s completely pointless talking about that issue unless you sort out the distribution of GST — first or contemporaneously — because no one is going agree to changes in the GST while no one can agree about distribution.”

It’s clear that Tony Abbott is still in discussions with the Liberal State Premiers about changing the distribution of the GST.
In contrast, the Gillard Government has made it clear that we support the current distribution of the GST which ensures all Australians have access to comparable services no matter what state or territory they live in.
