Podcast from ABC Late Night Live
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was swept into power after
building up a gigantic wave of anti-corruption sentiment, including the
practice of siphoning off 'Black money' - the illegal earnings of
India's rich and powerful.
On his first day in office in 2014, Modi's BJP government announced the establishment of a Special Investigations Team (SIT) led by a retired Supreme Court judge to look into black money.
Four years later, Josy Joseph has published a comprehensive expose of the extent of corruption at every level of Indian society, arguing that 'those who suffer the most from the system are the poor, without the money for bribes to obtain even basic essentials, they live in a permanent state of helplessness, and many of them are led to suicide'.
