Emergency Leaders for Climate Action - Bushfires

Climate Council

Extract from Climate Council

Words cannot describe the sheer size and scale of the bushfire threat currently raging in NSW, QLD and WA. Queensland. Our thoughts are with the families of those who have lost lives, the communities still on the fire front and those who have already lost their homes.
Australians owe their lives to the extraordinary bravery and selflessness of those out there fighting these incredibly dangerous fires.
We cannot thank you enough.
As the emergency response continues, debate is raging about the cause of the bushfires.
Our role is to provide accurate information to the public.
For us, the science is clear.

The past few weeks have been a blur for Greg Mullins.
Not only has he been out on the frontline in California and as a volunteer firefighter, the Climate Councillor and former NSW Fire Commissioner has been working day and night to make sure that the Australian public understands the link between climate change and worsening bushfires.
So far, Greg has been on The Project, Channel 7 Sunrise, Radio National, Studio 10, ABC 7.30 and News Breakfast, shutting down misinformation and holding political leaders to account.
In a rapidly changing environment, he has been a critical voice underlining climate change’s influence on these increasingly dangerous mega fires.
This morning, 5 members from the Emergency Leaders for Climate Action held a press conference, outlining the urgent action that is needed going forward.

Greg Mullins and the Emergency Leaders for Climate Action (ELCA) are calling for:
  • A well-equipped fire and emergency service, which is able to address the increasing risk to lives and livelihoods from bushfires that are exacerbated by climate change.
  • A credible federal climate and energy policy that will ramp up Australia’s transition to renewable energy and dramatically slash our greenhouse gas emissions.
What’s the latest update?
This morning it was confirmed that ELCA will be meeting with Minister for Natural Disaster and Emergency Management, David Littleproud, in the coming weeks. Watch the press conference here.
How you can help:
The risk hasn't passed. Today, Western Australia is facing catastrophic risk in the Kimberley region, and many other areas across New South Wales and Queensland are facing elevated risk.
Please keep safe and we will keep you updated as the situation evolves.
Thank you, as always, for your support.
