The argument goes something like this "Oh but we will still need coking coal for the blast furnaces to make steel" not anymore the German steel making company Thyssenkrupp has made steel using hydrogen .... fantastic!
Than it's a short step making hydrogen using renewable energy by electrolysis i.e. using electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxgyen.
It's such a simple process I remember many years ago making hydrogen in my high school chemistry lab.
