Progress in climate policy in the period 1989-1992 was notable. I don’t
think that story has been told accurately. Perhaps the perspective of a
political Independent helps.
President George H.W. Bush lived up to his “Whitehouse Effect” pledge.
The senior Bush is often painted negatively for reneging on his “no new
taxes” pledge, but in so doing he set the stage for a balanced national
budget and prosperity. In science, a willingness to change one’s mind
is a positive, essential characteristic.
He seemed like a pretty good guy, from my perspective.
