Newman Govt confirms shameless vote grabbing exercise at Redcliffe by-election

Media Release

Shadow National Parks Minister Bill Byrne has welcomed the LNP’s backdown on opening up green zones off Redcliffe as part of Campbell Newman’s desperate bid to hoodwink voters ahead of the recent by-election.
“The Premier’s ‘five minutes to midnight’ by-election promise to allow fishing inside a green zone at Scott’s Point was nothing more than a cynical vote-grabbing exercise,” Mr Byrne said.
“After the Scott Driscoll debacle, the Premier put politics before policy and showed he was willing to do anything to win a few votes."
“Nobody bought it, and now the Premier’s revealed how hollow his word really is by backing down on the commitment, even though he promised the people of Redcliffe that all his commitments would be delivered whether or not he won or lost."
“Labor supports recreational fishing, but we don’t support the Premier using the issue as a political football when it suits him."
“Green zones were put in place in order to ensure the long-term sustainability of our fishing industry. It shouldn’t be something Campbell Newman plays politics with.”
Member for Redcliffe Yvette D’Ath said the people of Redcliffe simply couldn’t trust the Newman Government.
“It was Campbell Newman who gave Redcliffe Scott Driscoll, and it was Campbell Newman who stood by Scott Driscoll for months and months."
“During the by-election, Mr Newman said regardless of who won, every single one of the commitments he made would be delivered."
“I welcome the Government’s backdown on this clearly-politically motivated commitment.”
