RENEWABLE ENERGY "OFFENSIVE" SAYS HOCKEY

Media Release

Mark Butler MP

Shadow Minister for Environment
 Climate Change and Water

Date:  02 May 2014

Joe Hockey has joined the ranks of the Coalition’s caucus of climate deniers, today labelling wind turbines “offensive” and a “blight on the landscape”.
In an interview with climate-denying shock jock Alan Jones, Hockey said:
“I drive to Canberra to go to Parliament … and I must say I find those wind turbines around Lake George to be utterly offensive and I think they are just a blight on the landscape.”
Mr Hockey seemed regretful that “we can’t knock those ones off” due to contractual obligations, but assured Jones that the Government will be abolishing any organisation providing expert advice on climate change in the upcoming budget.
“Joe Hockey has today revealed he is just one of the many in Tony Abbott’s Cabinet who are opposed to renewable energy and opposed to taking action to tackle climate change,” Shadow Minister for Environment and Climate Change Mark Butler said.
“We know that Liberal Member for Dawson George Christensen doesn’t believe in climate change and he says there are many in the Coalition Cabinet who feel the same way.
“We know that Tony Abbott is taking advice from his chief business advisor, Maurice Newman, who thinks he knows better than 97 per cent of the world’s scientists by claiming there’s no evidence of man-made climate change.
“The Renewable Energy Target is driving investment in energy, manufacturing and technology, creating jobs, reducing Australia’s carbon pollution, and will drive down electricity costs in the long-term.
“Unlike Tony Abbott, Labor knows that investment in renewable energy will position Australia to transition towards a clean energy future.
“Unlike Joe Hockey, Labor doesn’t view renewable energy as “offensive”.
“Tony Abbott would rather use billions of dollars of taxpayers money to pay big polluters to pollute than take climate change and our children’s futures seriously.

“Talk about twisted priorities.”
