US President Donald Trump has criticised NBC's Saturday Night Live the morning after a Christmas-themed spoof on the sketch-comedy show focused on him.
On Saturday night, SNL opened with an It's a Wonderful Life-themed sketch that imagined a White House if Mr Trump had not been elected.
In the sketch, Clarence the angel shows Mr Trump — played again by Alec Baldwin — that Melania has divorced him and Robert Mueller never had to launch an investigation into "some idiot for treason".
Key points:
- In the sketch, Melania had divorced Mr Trump and Robert Mueller had not launched his Russia probe
- Mr Trump has often been critical of SNL and Alec Baldwin's portrayal of him
- Last year Baldwin said he was unapologetic, saying the world needed some form of release from the President
Mr Trump slammed the show as a "Democratic spin machine" in response, saying it was the "REAL scandal" and that it should be "tested in
A REAL scandal is the one sided coverage, hour by hour, of networks like NBC & Democrat spin machines like Saturday Night Live. It is all nothing less than unfair news coverage and Dem commercials. Should be tested in courts, can’t be legal? Only defame & belittle! Collusion?
Mr Trump has often been critical of SNL and Baldwin's portrayal of him, and has taken to Twitter in the past to express his frustrations, even getting into spats with Baldwin.
Baldwin premiered his impersonation of Mr Trump on SNL in 2016 during the presidential election campaign.
He earned widespread acclaim and has reprised his role in many more skits sending up the President since.
When Baldwin hosted SNL, the show recorded its highest rating in six years, and eclipsed even Mr Trump's own episode as host in 2015.
Mr Trump has been unimpressed, however, saying the impersonation "stinks" and was "sad", and he accused the media of trying to rig the election.
Watched Saturday Night Live hit job on me.Time to retire the boring and unfunny show. Alec Baldwin portrayal stinks. Media rigging election!
Just tried watching Saturday Night Live - unwatchable! Totally biased, not funny and the Baldwin impersonation just can't get any worse. Sad
Baldwin told ABC News last year he was unapologetic, saying the world needed some form of release from the President.
"There's a lot of people in the country who didn't vote for Trump," he said.
"The President's policies can go on either side, to the right or the left, but the one thing you want is a president who's got a steadfastness, who can help the country, you know, steel themselves and face their problems and try to move forward with their lives.
"And Trump is someone who just makes everybody nervous and makes everybody anxious, [which is] the last thing you want the President to do."
