US President Donald Trump has been declared the winner of North Carolina by the Associated Press, as counting continues in the US election.

Nearly a week after Joe Biden was projected to be the winner in the US presidential election, the president-elect maintains a popular vote lead of more than 5 million ballots over Mr Trump.

As it stands Mr Biden is projected to secure 290 electoral college votes, with Mr Trump having won 232.

Mr Biden has 20 more electoral college votes than the 270 required for him to be elected president after flipping Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin and Arizona for the Democrats from the 2016 presidential election results.

Only one state remains to be called.

Here's what you need to know.

Trump declared winner of North Carolina

AP declared Mr Trump the winner in North Carolina on Friday, US time, after concluding there were not enough ballots left to be counted that would allow Mr Biden to overtake his lead.

Friday was the deadline for counties in North Carolina to certify their results.

Following updates from most counties in the state, Mr Trump was leading by 1.3 per cent of the vote, with 99 per cent of ballots counted.

North Carolina took a long time to call because the race was close and ballots postmarked by November 3 could be counted until Thursday.

Georgia is the only state that hasn't been called

Now that Mr Trump has been declared the winner in North Carolina the only state yet to be called is Georgia.

Despite some major US networks calling Georgia for Mr Biden, AP has not declared a winner in the state, with the president-elect leading Mr Trump by 0.3 per cent.

AP does not call a race that is — or is likely to become — subject to a recount.

The recount began on Friday, with election workers counting votes by hand.

Under state law in Georgia, the trailing candidate may request a recount if the victory margin is less than 0.5 percentage points.

In Georgia, one race in the general election must also be audited by hand to check that machines counted ballots accurately.

AP says it will reassess the state of the race once the audit is complete.

Another legal setback for Trump in Michigan

Another Michigan state court has rejected a request from Mr Trump's legal team to stop the certification of election results in the state.

The state, which Mr Trump won in 2016 but is projected to lose to Mr Biden in 2020, is due to certify its election results on November 23.

A judge refused to stop the certification of Detroit-area election results, rejecting claims by Mr Trump's legal team that the city had committed fraud and tainted the count with its handling of absentee ballots.

It's the third time a judge has declined to intervene in the state's count.

Mr Biden is up by more than 140,000 votes in Michigan with 99 per cent of the vote counted.
